Breaking into the fashion industry is tough. With all the aspiring designers vying for exposure and dreaming of showing their work on the ramp, the competition is truly fierce. If there is one institution that is responsible for the careers of many of the country’s top fashion mavens, it’s definitely MEGA. The brainchild of Sari Yap, Mega Young Designers Competition started in 1994 and has catapulted local designers to fame and for some even international recognition. Last April 23, the country’s fashion elite flocked to the New Performing Arts Theatre of Resorts World Manila to watch the reunion of YDC’s most prominent alumni. The fashion show gathered the masters and the future stars of the industry. Hosted by celebrity KC Concepcion, the show was well conceptualized, glamorous and drew raves from the audience.
More than a dozen designers showed their capsule collections including : Patrice Ramos-Diaz, Michi Calica, Puey Quiñones, Chris Diaz, Mich Dulce, Oj Hofer, Jeffrey Rogador and many more.
The BQP’s TOP PICKS
VEEJAY FLORESCA – Although Floresca was only a finalist in the year that he joined the YDC, he turned out to be one of its stellar finds. His models opened the show in a parade of kaleidoscope swatches made of neoprene fabric. The colors reminded me of Salvatore Ferragamo’s Fall 2015 collection. Fabulous, sleek and sexy. Definitely something I would buy and wear.
ARIES LAGAT – As a perennial lover of black, Lagat’s ebony collection quickly caught my eye. This designer knows how to flatter a woman’s body.
IVARLUSKI ASERON – Nude and pastel at its best. My friend who was watching the show with me let out a “Wow” when Ivar’s models walked the runway. I totally loved his jacket and palazzo pants ensemble. Have to make an appointment to see him soon!
RAJO LAUREL – Clean, sophisticated and form flattering . If Veejay Floresca’s clothes made for a strong start, Rajo Laurel’s black and gold 5 piece collection ended the fashion show with a thundering bang! Totally loved those long , bouncy fringes on his jumpsuit!
All of the participating designers went on stage just before the close of the show and were greeted by resounding applause. Congratulations MEGA for another successful event! Here’s to another twenty years of discovering the very best in fashion!
