The start of each year always brings positivity to our lives. A chance to make amends, change for the better and dream new dreams. Who knew that just as few months into 2020, we would find ourselves facing so many obstacles? The biggest blow, of course, is the pandemic, which looms as a threat to all of us. Lives were lost, people are still getting sick, and many SME’s have closed shop due to the abnormal state of economy.

In spite of all these, there is much to be thankful for in 2020. While some lost their jobs, others started using their skills to start home businesses. New words were coined like “plantita” (Hello fellow gardeners!) and “platita” (“How many more plates are you going to buy?” my annoyed husband would ask after each trip to the mall.) We all had a  taste of ube pandesal, baked sushi, a host of cakes and pastries and saw the rise of so many more food fads. And  who among us have not been part of a Zoom meeting? We all did what we must to survive. Most important, the charitable trait of our countrymen became even more evident during the real storms that visited the country.

Filipinos are uniquely humorous and will continue to soldier on.
