Fall in Love with Folded & Hung’s Holiday Collection

Whew! What a hectic week! I sat front row on the first day of the four day long Manila Fashion Festival (MFF).  The Marquee at the Edsa Shangrila Hotel was teeming with designers, fashion enthusiasts, buyers and the press.  All of us were there to watch the much talked about fashion spectacle of the year.  Aptly entitled “Here is the Now,” the festival’s participating design houses and labels showcased the latest looks from their holiday collections.

Folded & Hung made its debut in MFF with its Romance line. The clothes were done in muted hues, pantone’s 2016 colors baby blue and pink with a  sprinkle of black, blue and maroon. Worn by local tinseltown’s young and rising celebrity couples, the collection is distinctly sporty, youthful and fun. CEO Ronald Pineda couldn’t be happier.

The Deconstruction of Joel Escober

I’ve been perusing different  accessories, purses and  shoes for the past fifteen minutes. My heart beats a little faster as I ask to take a closer look at one of the more intricate neckpieces. How absolutely gorgeous, I think to myself.  Then I  move on to inspect the clothes by the display window.  A row of  mannequins are all dressed in black.  Some feature delicate lace overlay while others have embroidered flower cutouts sewn in them.  All sported black baseball hats which are again adorned with floral appliqués. Quite an unexpected pairing with the distinctly  feminine cuts of the clothes.  My interviewee’s assistant promptly announces that he would be arriving shortly and that her employer sends his apologies for being caught in traffic.

It’s my fifth time to visit  Courtyard 1976. The  112 square meter showroom/boutique of fashion designer Joel Escober opened its doors to the public last  September 15, 2015. “This is the  biggest risk I’ve taken and the most fulfilling by far,” Joel says.  A business trip to Europe, London to be more precise, became the catalyst to his transformation from made-to-order maven to ready-to-wear designer.  “I saw rows and rows of stores that carried beautiful things. Opening Ceremony in Covent Garden blew me away. Tapos naisip ko bigla, gusto ko magkaron ng ganon. (Suddenly I  thought I wanted a store of my own) I wanted to dress all kinds of stylish women and not just those that come to my atelier to have gowns made. It was like an epiphany. I had a vision and  wanted a stage to show who I am and all that I could be. ”

The possibility of expanding his business and owning a curated store excited the designer to no end. He had a hand in the conceptualization, construction and the final look of the store.  The interior is chic industrial.  Polished cement floors, exposed ceilings and glamorous  fixtures are found inside. Natural light from transluscent panes gives the customer the feeling of a being in a posh sunroom. In the middle is a long white  table showcasing different local products. To the far left are dressing rooms decorated with plush grey rugs and wrought iron chandeliers.  To the right is a wall lined with white shelves containing Joel’s accessories as well as creations by other Filipino designers. “One thing I’ve learned in this industry is that it’s a tough business but there is room for  the determined and the talented to succeed. I share my space with friends who consign their products.  They are a part of this dream, too,”  said Joel. Some of the featured personalitites include Noel Crisostomo, Jerome Salaya- Ang and Adante Leyesa.

What is next for Joel Escober? “My design aesthetic is feminine , romantic but always with a hint of unpredictability.  I want to keep treading that path. Ayoko ng may signature look. I always want to evolve and refuse to be boxed in! Aside from my fashion business, I’m thinking of a furniture store. Maybe even a restaurant in the future. “ He pauses for a bit and concludes, “As long as I have the support of my team, the encouragement of family and friends, I will keep on creating.”

Athleisure by Avel Bacudio

Whew! What a hectic week! I sat front row on last show of the four day long Manila Fashion Festival (MFF).

The fourth night had the masters taking center stage. Hair expert Lourd Ramos opened the show with models wearing outlandish hairpieces from Aderans. The audience applauded Rhett Eala’s soft and feminine silhouettes, JC Buendia’s apple green and black pairings, and the ornate, layered, and ethnic inspired outfits by Randy Ortiz. The final night’s standout designer, however, was Avel Bacudio. “My 20piece black and white capsule collection is an ode to my past and present,” the fashion maven shared. Houndstooth (which is a two-tone textile pattern of Scottish origin and characterized by broken checks) was the prominent print used. Bacudio sent sporty jackets, sweaters and pants down the runway.  Using neoprene, tulle and digital printing, his gowns elicted “oohs”and “ahhs.” My most favorite piece was a black number with a low V neck done in glittery fabric on the chest with layered tulle sleeves. Simply breathtaking!

All Dolled Up

I don’t see it being sold now in toy stores, but back in the day all the little girls played with paper dolls. Our pulp mannequins normally came with a stand so we could dress them up easily with paper clothes, of course. I remember being so obsessed with precision cutting. My blunt edged scissors moved slowly across the dotted lines of each dress, shoe and bag. And after, my sister and I would outdo each other in our choice of outfit combinations. Fun times!

Today, I still get to play dress up. Only it’s called styling and instead of cut out paper costumes, I get to choose from beautiful dresses from clothing brands that I work with. One of my favorite muses is model/entrepreneur/fashion designer  Tessa Nieto-Villalon. Her newest collection from her store Florence Fling (FF) is decidedly feminine and graceful. “ My pieces are comfortable, eye-catching but unobtrusive and timeless.  It’s something you can use and keep for many years, “ says Tessa.  “I started my clothing business five years ago and my design aesthetic has always been respectful to the woman’s body.  I want my customers to be able to feel confident in everything that I make.”

Off to the Ball

Florence Fling carries casual daytime wear to formal evening wear. It is in the latter that I think , she is the strongest at. Her gowns are a favorite of celebrities which comes as no surprise. Tessa manipulates jersey like Cinderella’s fairy godmother- only much better.  The result?  Exquisite long gowns that are must-haves for women.  The cost? So much less than your go-to designer. All of the gowns I chose for the shoot retail below Php5,000.

Plain or printed, these gowns will surely turn heads.

Red, White and Blue

I love the current crop of FF’s jumpsuits! The V neck in the front, V back, loose fit in the waistline and a bow on the left shoulder makes this piece extra special. You can dress it up with heels or opt for a more playful look and wear sneakers with it.  Either way, it’s a winner! I also like the separates (top with front tie detail and wide leg pants) which were done in basic colors (red, black and white).   White on white is on point this season.

What you should be wearing everyday. Jumpsuits and separates in basic colors.

Pretty Pleats

The comeback of the pleated skirt has been received warmly by the modern woman. This is something  that you must try on first before purchasing. It’s quite tricky to work this style as it can make you look heavier (ok fatter, to put it more bluntly) when not done right. Pair it with a crop top for a more edgy getup or with a dainty top for a more polished and romantic look.  Tessa’s midi length pleated skirts are this season’s runaway bestsellers!

How lovely! Pleated skirts in floral print and cream.

What I like best about Florence Fling is the mileage that I get from the clothes. In more than one occasion, I have mixed and matched my purchases and have been very successful in my pairings. So what is old can be new again just by trying on different combinations. This is important for practical (and busy) moms like me.  After all, we never outgrow playing dress-up, do we?

Lovely Lunettes

Living in a tropical country has its challenges.  The heat index just won’t abate for majority of the year  and the weather really dictates what outfit you should wear for the day.  Light make-up or no make up is advisable in the summer as you literally start to sweat the minute you get out of the shower.  So how do you spruce up your au naturelle look and add  a little sprinkle of fab to your daily get-up?  Well, one way to do it is to wear fashionable sunglasses.

Designer Looks for Less

My latest Mommy find is a brand of stylish eyewear that’s so reasonably priced, you can afford to buy one for each day of the week!  Sounds too good to be true?  Read on.  “ICON Eyewear has been around since 2005.  The brand is known for carrying a wide selection of designs for both men and women.  We have the classics like wayfarers and aviators.  Those are always saleable.  We also have designer-inspired eyewear that are guaranteed to make you a head-turner without having to spend thousands.  My personal favorites are the cat eyes shape because they look feminine and playful,” says Bambi Garcia, CEO of the brand. “We try to keep our inventory fresh and up-to-date.  If you drop by any of our pop-up stores and see something you like, better get it because it won’t be there the following day.  Round frames are hot this season as well as aviators.  There are only three pieces per design.  New stocks come in every two to three weeks.”

The Travelling Shades

For sunglasses that cost a mere P499, it’s not surprising to know that it’s a favorite of the middle class and by the A crowd too.  In fact, if you visit Icon Eyewear’s Instagram account, you’ll see a recurring theme.  Fans of the label take photos of themselves or the eyewear itself in different parts of the world , post them and tag Icon.  Bambi who is a frequent traveller herself  started this trend by taking photos of her products in the different countries she has  visited abroad and sharing it in her social media accounts.

This lady boss always wear her ICON sunglasses in all her travels.

Who wears Icon? According to its owner, her clientele is composed mostly of young professionals, college students and practical moms who are fashion forward and savvy shoppers.  They are smart fashionistas who want the latest styles without spending too much.

Around the world with Icon sunglasses

I’m living proof that the sunglasses can instantly transform your look.  Since I have kindergarten skills when it comes to putting on make-up and my skin easily gets irritated in the few times that I do, I always have my Icon eyewear as part of my beauty arsenal.   I have a pair of sunglasses stashed in each of the three bags I currently use.  It’s useful in hiding the remains of a late night, gives me a comfortable and confident look and sometimes  I use it indoors as a headband to pull my hair away from my face.  Glad to have shared this little guilty pleasure  but practical beauty advice to you all.  Next week will be all about fragrance from another local brand. Watch out for it!

The Suit of Champions

Soccer moms, baseball moms, basketball moms – these are how mothers who chaperone their sons to practices and games of their  chosen sports are called.  Then there’s us – the swim moms.  I must say that we are a different breed.   Being a swim mom requires a tremendous amount of patience and an endless supply of sunblock.  Unlike other sports where  games are scheduled, swimming competitions last for hours on end.  Waiting for your kid’s particular heat under the blazing heat (pun intended) is really something one needs to get used to.  Aside from the time, the scorching sun (indoor competitions are few) and supporting your child’s passion for his sport, there’s the expenses.  My 12 year old son has been swimming half his life and my now 5 year old girl has just taken up the sport.  Unfortunately, their schools don’t have pools and I had to make them join a team in an exclusive club so they can train regularly with accredited swim coaches.  Aside from that, attention must be given to the gear required for training. Goggles, kickboard, poolbuoy, fins, bands etc.  Of utmost consideration , however, is the kind of swimsuit that they have to wear to minimize the “drag”.  Frictional drag results from the constant rubbing against the water molecules by the swimmer’s body which slows forward motion.  As the swimmer moves faster through the water, the drag starts to build.  A fraction of a second matters in competitions so serious swimmers have to invest in the right kind of swimsuit.

Turbo Swimwear is the choice of our local champion swimmers Ariana Canaya and Courtney Gray.

Over the years, I’ve bought different brands of swimwear for my kids but one stands out in particular in terms of overall quality.  “Turbo is synonymous to supersonic energy and speed – much like a high powered –engine.  We use the best fabric in the market (100% PBT polyester).  Some athletes have even christened our suits as the toughest there is! Stretch  it, pull it, wear it daily for a year or even store it for a long time and you can see that it keeps its perfect form. No wrinkling, drying out or discoloring whatsoever. More importantly, it significantly lessens the drag,” says champion swimmer, national water polo player and CEO of Turbo Phils Dale Evangelista.  “Turbo originated from Spain focused mainly on customized swimwear catered to  both professional and recreational swimming and water polo players and enthusiasts.  After its success in Europe, it has its expanded its business globally and now offers all kinds of swim training materials and accessories for the youth and adult segments.   The brand is also  known for fashion forward swimming apparel and can customize designs for a whole team or club. Turbo can even produce just 1 swimsuit so you can feel unique and special!”

Red, white and blue! Swimsuits, caps and backpacks are available too!

To add to its credentials, Turbo is worn by the national water polo teams of Spain, USA, Russia, Croatia Montenegro and the Philippines.  Ambassadors of the brand include two of the  most promising swim sirens and bemedalled pool darlings of our country – Courtney Melissa Tan Gray and Ariana  Mikaela Canaya. Both Filipinas boast of a long list of achievements and have garnered awards in the swimming arena locally and internationally.

As a longtime swim mom, I like Turbo for its durability.  I find that I don’t need to buy swimsuits as often as I used to. The brand is priced reasonably and because of its excellent performance, has proven to be good value for money.  It’s definitely a prize find for a practical mom like me!

Signature Scents for a Cause

Scents evoke memories of persons, things, places and even feelings.  Psychologists say that we make these connections very early on when we first smell a certain fragrance. This is the reason why we associate most scents with our childhood.  The smell of freshly baked brownies remind us of  weekend visits to grandmother’s house.   Some dislike mint flavored food because they think of toothpaste.  On the other hand,  some people recall vacations spent frolicking by the ocean and feel a sense of calm whenever bamboo, citrus flavors or coconut is sprayed .  It is the brain that establishes the link between the smell and the memory.

Renowned fashion designer Avel Bacudio underwent the same process when he decided to take on his new role  as  perfume chemist.  He just recently launched his eponymous fragrance line which bears the names of important people in his life (except for one which pays homage to his hometown) – both in the past and in the present.  As a designer, Avel has established himself as one of the best in the industry.  He has won both local and international competitions, has shown multiple collections all around the globe and has remained much sought-after in the fashion world as proven by the elite clientele who frequent his by-appointment-only atelier.  And yes, reigning Ms. Universe Pia Wutrzbach has donned his creations as well.

The one and only Avel Bacudio.

The one and only Avel Bacudio.

“I’m excited!  This is another dream come true for me. Diba kasi yun talaga ang next step for a designer eh. Lahat ng malalaking fashion houses may signature scents sila.   Now meron na rin ako,”  Avel exclaims halfway through his well done steak at a European bistro in Greenbelt 3.  “I took my time in creating my scents.  All the ingredients used in my fragrance line came from Paris. The oil concentration in my perfume is much higher than other local brands so it lasts longer. I’m responsible for everything –from the design of the bottle to the font used on the label to the final packaging — ako lahat yan,” he continues.

There are currently 5 scents in the perfume line.  Avel named them after his father Avelino (a land surveyor), his mother Trinidad (a local seamstress),  his favorite niece Avjah, his talent Jerome and the small fishing town of Buhi, Camarines Sur where he hails from.  Strictly for men, Avelino is made from lemongrass and pear.    Trinidad has hints of bamboo and tea and is decidedly feminine and earthy.   The rest are unisex fragrances.  I just love the smell of Avjah on my skin!  Light, fruity and sweet it is very similar to the eau de parfume I hoard from Jo Malone.  Jerome (named after his talent) is borne from a pairing of lemongrass and basil while Buhi marries the scents of freesia and lemongrass.  You can even  “layer” your perfume or spray one over the other to create a whole new scent.  To make the scent linger, remember to spritz a bit  on your wrists and  on your neck. Do spray the perfume from about half a foot away from your body to have more coverage.

The best part is that for only Php600 you can purchase your very own 50 ml signature Avel perfume.  Available ,too, is the lemon and basil home diffuser (150ml for Php1500).  Breathing in a high concentration of pure lemon oil works to refresh busy minds, encouraging clear thinking. Basil, meanwhile,  is known to ease mental fatigue.  For every bottle sold, Avel donates 20% to the Northern Luzon School for the Visually Impaired, Inc. (NSLV). The designer has long been a resolute supporter of the foundation having suffered serious retinal damage years before which almost caused him to go blind.

What’s next for the affable Avel?  “ I’m working on more scents to add to my perfume business.  In the next two years though I see an Avel Home Collection which will carry candles, throws and beddings. Sosyal…Pakkk!!!”

Freedom vs Justice

My 12 year old boy M is the biggest fan of Ironman. Behind the ironsuit is Tony Stark ,the ultrasmart megabillionaire  scion of his equally brilliant inventor father, Stark Industries founder Howard Stark.  M has always been fascinated with Tony’s intelligence,  witty one-liners and I-don’t-care-what-the world-thinks-of-me attitude.  He has a whole collection of Ironman toys and memorabilia, dressed up like his favorite superhero during his 7th birthday and even virtually suited up as the metalled Avenger via a hologram powered attraction when we visited California Adventure in Los Angeles a few years back.

Both ladies and men's apparel are available. Choose your side!

Both Civil War ladies and men’s apparel are available. Choose your side!

So M was over the moon when the first trailer of  Captain America Civil War was shown.  At a special screening last Monday  which the two of us attended in Megamall, M was so excited he chowed down his bucket of popcorn even before the movie started.  The latest Avengers installment  is based on crossover plots from previously released Marvel movies.  It begins when a grief stricken mother pays Tony Stark (played oh-so-perfectly by Robert Downey Jr.) a visit after he gives a talk to MIT students.  She has lost a son due to the superheroes’ past mission in fictional Sokovia.  This incident is followed by a bombing attack  which resulted to heavy human collateral damage in Lagos, Nigeria which immediately prompts Downey’s character to support government oversight.   Ironman’s action is seen as a kowtowing surrender to the will of politicians by Captain America (played by the superbuff Chris Evans).  The proposed Superhero Regulatory Act  creates a deep divide  in the Avengers alliance.   Captain America  believes in remaining free to protect the people sans political interference while Ironman sees regulation as  a justifiable and effective means to spare innocent lives.  The other team members must now choose a side.

Cool Captain America gear from F&H

The good news is that local  clothing brand Folded & Hung (F&H) has an ongoing partnership with Disney.  The Marvel franchise is now under the Disney brand.  With the third of the Avengers movie now out in theatres, F&H has launched a variety of  cool Team Captain America and Team IronMan apparel for both the men and ladies.   Rivalry, which echoes the plot of the movie, is the theme of the collection.  Cotton shirts as well as  long and boxy fit tees with prints of  “Truth vs Justice”,  the mask of Ironman and the shield of Captain America are now in the stores.  An assortment of backpacks, duffle bags and sling ons are also available.  Each Team Captain America piece has a counter Team Ironman item.  Now it’s up to you to choose your team!

As for my family, the husband has secured four tickets for tonight.  My son and I certainly don’t mind watching the movie for a second time.  (I will watch anything with Robert Downwy Jr. in it!)  We promised not to let out any spoilers since my little daughter and her Dad have not seen the show.  This time around, however, we will be dressed up for the occasion.  Wearing our  chosen shirts from F&H, it will now be known to all that the  Fermins are stalwart fans of Team Ironman!

What the Cool Kids Wear

I’m quite sure a lot of moms have the same dilemma as I do.  We see clothes that would look absolutely adorable on our kids (never mind the price tag), we make them fit it in the store (or just buy them off the rack having been suddenly overcome by shopping euphoria), then we go home and keep it in the closet.  They wear it once or twice and voila!  Just like that, they seem to have grown overnight and the clothes don’t fit anymore.  Money down the drain, euphoria bubble busted big time.

The Summer collection is all about the 70’s vibe, marked by its powdery and aged blues combined with more upbeat and bright colors.

The good news is that the Zippy Kidstore has just opened!  Zippy is a children’s apparel brand from Portugal which caters to children ages 0 to 14 years.  “We pride ourselves in being an urban brand, characterized by a contemporary style so that children feel cool and comfy. It’s for the the preppy hipster, the expressive and the practical kids.  The store is a one-stop-shopping haven for the whole family.  Our Spring/Summer 2016  collection offers a full line of  apparel, fashionable shoes, accessories as well as  nursery products.  Soon we will have car seats, cribs and strollers in the stores,” says  Karren Alvarez, brand manager of Zippy.

Cool kids wear Zippy!

Last Monday, Zippy hosted an intimate gathering at their flagship store in Glorietta. Select moms and kids got to preview the latest collection from the brand and were treated to fun activities as well.   The children spent quite some time playing with different board and card games.  My 4 year old had a great time as she played a game of  Old Maid with older kids!  Red treat bags were also given to guests so they can have their sweet fill from the candy buffet.  At the far end of the table, there was a pyramid of cupcakes neatly arranged in a cupcake tree holder ready to be decorated by the guests.  Everyone had smiles on their faces as they poured multi-colored sprinkles, pearl beads and dollops of chocolate over the mini  pastries!

The highlight of the event was when the kids were asked to choose anything they liked from the store.   Everything was eye candy so it took a while before everybody got their choices down pat.  Before I knew it, my daughter had a denim Minnie Mouse bag dangling from her arm and promptly announced, “I like this!”  I built her outfit based on her choice.  Faded denim skirt, a light Minnie Mouse top and the cutest floral sneakers with peach ribbons completed her ensemble.  A perfect summer get-up.  Of course, we took photos.  What  fun!

Aside from the wide, fashion forward selection of apparel, what I like most about Zippy is its competitive price point.  Basic t-shirts sell for P179, ballerina flats for P529,  and sneakers for P659.  It’s definitely a brand that the cool kids will wear and one that all fashionable but practical moms like me will love!

Clothes, Cotton Candy and Cupcakes

It’s vacation time! My 4 year old daughter could not contain her excitement as I showed her the invitation to my event.  It had colorful donuts, gummy bears, lollies and a big slice of cake.  “I want to go! I want to go, “ she jumped up and down.  So early last Saturday morning, she dressed up in her grey fringed dress and Frozen boots—all from H&M, of course!  We were, after all, headed to the H&M and Celebrity Mom Shopping Play Date at SM Makati.

Sugar Rush Station

Sugar Rush Station

The Kids’ Section was already teeming with excited toddlers when we arrived.  My daughter R was given a cupcake liner with different tokens so she could enjoy the different booths that were set up.  She immediately made a beeline for the cotton candy station.  Even I was impressed with the pink  heart shaped cotton candy framed by white spun sugar!  What a sweet treat indeed!  I wanted to scour the racks of clothes, shoes and accessories already but my little diva had other things in mind.  “Look, Mom!  Candy buffet!”  Googly eyed and eyes darting here and there, she filled up her red polka dot candy box with all kinds of confections. Sugar rush!

The fun didn’t stop there.  As  DJ Marc Naval played a Justin Bieber song,  R spotted the  Face Painting booth at the far end of the hall.   She chose a pink cupcake with multi colored sprinkles for her cheek design.  After that, I finally got her to fit two summer dresses,  a red tulle skirt and some tops.  Guests enjoyed up to 50% discount on H&M Kids items and the buy 3 pay for 2 promotions.

It was definitely  a fashionable and fun morning for all the attendees.   Lucky guests also went home with special prizes,  The first 5 boys and 5 girls were handed out Early Bird gift bags.  Others were given gift certificates for winning in the Speed Stacks Competiition.

Our weekend mother- daughter bonding date was not quite over yet.  As we stepped out of the retail store, R saw a pink poster with all her favorite Disney Princesses.    It turned out that there was a  Disney – Maya Hotcake mix cupcake decorating activity on the upper floor.   She had a grand time swirling icing on the cupcake and putting on rainbow colored sprinkles on it before she finished it off in 3 bites!
