Ravenous at Roku!

Lately, my family has fallen into a “dining  out drudgery”.  We’ve ran out of options on where to eat.  When you have kids, their food preferences almost always dictate where the family dines.   On Wednesday nights (our weekly date night) and Sunday mornings (after mass) when we are all inside the car, the husband asks “Where do you want to eat?”   There’s usually a lull  that follows or turning of heads as we repeat the question to each other.

My latest dining discovery!

My latest dining discovery!

So it was quite a delight when I discovered ROKU in Trinoma Mall. ROKU means “six” in Japanese. I was told later that the owners have six family members – hence the catchy name. The place has a fresh, industrial and quirky feel.  Its modern light fixtures, stripped grey walls mixed with wooden touches and orange accents all seem to work as the restaurant was packed with diners.  “We’re a casual dining restaurant that welcomes families and friends. We want to create a fun vibe for guests to enjoy as they share delicious Japanese favorites.  This is our second branch,” said 22 year old owner Milka Romero.  “See, we love to travel and Japan is one of our favorite places to visit.  The food is fantastic and we wanted to bring the dishes back to Manila.   To make it more appealing to the public, we have infused Filipino flavors to the Japanese recipes. I think we have been quite successful in our kitchen inventions,” added  Sheila Romero, the other half of the beautiful enterprising mother-daughter duo behind ROKU.

The Usual, The New and The Unexpected

All time favorites ramen, sushi rolls, tempura and donburi are included in the menu.   Ther servings are quite hefty and the prices affordable.   What sets it apart from other Japanese restaurants?   “It’s really the diversity of our menu. We are continually evolving so we can offer new and exciting flavors to the diners. We have all these flavors for our sushi rolls and people keep on coming back to try them.  People are looking for a fresh take on the old favorites and it’s our mission to deliver!”, shares Milka enthusiastically.

Roku Dream Roll

DREAM ROLLS – My favorite! Sushi with a crunch! Made from tempura-battered salmon, kani and cream cheese.

Firecracker Roll

FIRECRACKER ROLL – A spicy delight! Spicy salmon overload with crunchy tempura flakes

EBI TEMPURA TONKOTSU RAMEN – Shoyu Tonkotsu base soup with Ebi Tempura and Aji Tamago

ROKU CHASHU TONKOTSU RAMEN – A heapful of hearty flavorful soup. Shoyu Tonkotsu base with Chashu Pork and Aji tamago

The Dynamics of a Duo

Milka, a Management Economics graduate from Ateneo, says there is no better mentor in business than her Mom.  “I’ve always been amazed at how my Mom gets everything done.  She is such a multi-tasker!  From her I learned that it’s important to be passionate about what I do and to put in the hours – no matter how long,  She also  constantly reminds me to take a look at the numbers! Time management and communicating with the staff are things that are indispensable too. “   I can see Sheila beaming at Milka   “ It gives me pride to be able to teach my daughter and to see her thrive.  I can see so much of myself in her – but she is the better version of me “  What’s next for ROKU? Another branch will soon open by next year. The dynamic  duo has likewise created Sushi Nori which is all about sushi-on-the go.

A Celebration of Filipino Flavors at Café Ilang-Ilang

My family is always in  constant search for new dining places to try out.  We each have our own preferences.  On numerous occasions, we have had  to vote on where to dine for the day.  Last Friday evening, though, our big appetites pointed us to one destination, our favorite buffet – Café Ilang- Ilang at the Manila Hotel.  It didn’t matter that we had to travel all the way from the south.  The famed Grande Dame’s french macarons alone  by Chef Jerome would be worth the trip!

Manila Hotel Macarons

Colorful dried leaves made into chandelier-like décor adorned the ceiling inside the hall.  My quizzical look was answered by the gracious host who led us to our table.  “Today is the first day of the Filipino Food Festival, Ma’am.  You have to try the lechon.  Enjoy the feast! ,” she said.  We had every intention of following her recommendation

Cafe Ilang Ilang Filipino Festival

Before filling up my plate, I scouted the Filipino spread for the night.  Although, Café Ilang-Ilang had all of its 8 live stations operational (Asian, Mediterranean, European, Western, Pan- Asian, Churrasco Grill Station, Italian and the dessert bar), I decided to zero in on the Filipino Cuisine.  The spread included everything from the familiar (fishballs, adobo and menudo) to the not-your-everyday fare (balut salpicao , hiplog-shrimp with salted egg sauce and pizza palabok).  I soon learned that culinary personality Dedet  “Lechon Diva” Dela Fuente Santos had been invited to showcase her Filipino specialties throughout the two-week run of the festival.  Along with timeless classics as prepared by Manila Hotel’s Executive Chef Walter Konrad, guests can partake of the exciting and award winning flavors of the guest chef.

MHFilFest- Balut Salpicao

Balut like you’ve never tasted before!

It was good that we arrived just before 6pm. Shortly, thereafter, the lechon truffle was brought out.  The framed description alongside the chopping board read – FRENCH LECHON – stuffed with truffle rice. Awarded tastiest Asian dish in  London by the Chowtzer group.  A line immediately formed at the lechon counter and guests had varying requests — “Can I have the belly portion?  Please give more crispy skin!  More laman and less truffle rice for me.”

So worth all the calories! But remember --everything in moderation.

So worth all the calories! But remember –everything in moderation.

Back at our table,  everyone was enjoying dinner. The lechon was sinfully delicious!  Both my 12  year old son and 4 year old daughter finished off their crispy, tasteful portions quickly. My boy then asked me to try the adobo pizza he had gotten from the Italian station.   The soy and vinegar marinated meat on  the crispy quick-fire cooked dough tasted really good.  I personally liked the crab cooked in crab fat and coconut cream.  I would have preferred for this dish to have more of the rich sauce though. Perfect for smothering the succulent crab meat in!

My favorite dish in the festival.

My favorite dish in the festival.

After two more gulit-free trips back to the roasted pig section, it was time for dessert.  I highly recommend the Mango Trifle from Pepita’s Kitchen.  Light, sweet and bursting with local flavors, this confection is made from mango mousse with rosquillos, broas, puto seko, fresh mango slices and leche flan.  Not to be missed also are the hotel’s special bibingka and puto bumbong at the alfresco area.

Sit, Sip and Snack at Mrs. Fields Café in SM Makati

Mrs. Fields is a brand Pinoys know and have come to love over the years.  We all have our favorite cookie flavors – chocolate chip, semi-sweet , white macadamia to name a few.

From being a world-renowned chippery (cookie place),  Mrs. Fields has now not only expanded its menu offerings but has opened café’s all around the metro.  The latest café  located on the second floor of SM Makati had its blessing and official public launch just recently.

MF Ribbon Cutting

Present in the Mrs. Fields Café opening in SM Makati are from left Sheryl See, Mrs. Aurora Genuino, SM Makati ABM Mary Grace Reyes, and Gerwyn See.

The 52 square meter snack bar, which can comfortably sit up to 35 guests, exudes a fresh, quaint, country atmosphere.   Diners can choose to lounge on four comfortable red upholstered arm chairs in the front or  sit on the  wooden bentwood-inspired chairs that are lined up on the sides of the inline store.  Complimentary colors of red and green (on the hedges) were used to give the store a young and alfresco vibe.

Enjoy a light snack with family and friends at the Café.

“The café serves as a resting place or “pit stop”  to mallgoers.  We have free wifi here ,too, so the yuppies and the students can drop by, have a snack and some refreshments while they surf the net.  Good food for good value – that’s what we offer at the Mrs. Fields Café,” says Mrs. Fields President Gerwyn See.

New in the Menu

Sandwiches and  Cold Drinks

Aside from the well-loved desserts (cookies, nibblers and bars),  Mrs. Fields now serves light but filling snacks .   Try their selection of sandwiches (tuna , roast beef and chicken Sicilian) and paninis (pork, beef and cheese, spiced ham and cheese,  garden  pesto).  Adults and children will surely love the waffles which come in two variants – peanut butter and banana and bacon and cheese.  If you’re looking for something heavier, then the sliders trio is a good choice for you.  Enjoy your three mini-burgers (pork, ham and cheese, bologna) or share it with a friend.    For about P250, guests can even order the sandwiches, paninis, waffles and sliders with a cookie and a drink  (perfect pairing offer).

My kids love the breezers!   These cold refreshments  (P115 for 16oz)  are actually a cross between an ice cream and a shake.  I prefer the Cookie Crumble  variant which is made of Mrs. Fields  cookies blended with creamy vanilla and topped with cookie crumbs.   The children, however, like the Brownie Mocha flavor which has Mrs. Fields brownies, creamy vanilla , a hint of espresso and topped with brownie crumbs.  Delicious!

Cookie Tarts

If you’re an adventurous  foodie and love to discover flavors that delight the tastebuds, then you’re in for a treat!  The Mrs. Fields  kitchen has been very busy concocting , mixing and baking exciting flavors for its customers.  Are you ready for  savory spinach, ham & cheese and mushroom cookie tarts?  My personal favorite is the spinach variant.  I particularly enjoyed its salty-sweet taste.  Definitely a must-try!  The cookie tarts also come in sweet and familiar flavors such as ube , leche flan and pastillas.

Manila Hotel – The House of French Macarons

Executive Pastry Chef Jerome Benda is responsible for the queue at the confectionary section of  Café Ilang Ilang at The Manila Hotel.   His baked creations are luring diners like bees to the honeypot.   Think of chocolate eclairs, scones,  assorted cookies,  cakes , strawberry panna cotta and  crème brulee .  Just to sweeten the deal  a little bit more,  there’s also  a chocolate fondue to dip your favorite fruits into.  And  for the piece de résistance , every guest MUST taste the star of the dessert bar — the french macarons.

Dessert Station

Café Ilang-ilang’s dessert station boasts of luscious pastries, custom made cakes and a variety of delectable sweets.

Manila Hotel Macarons

These delightful melt-in-your mouth macarons are baked using a perfect combination of almond powder, egg whites and icing sugar .

Have you always wanted to be a baker?

In school, I was very good in Mathematics.  There were only two choices for me – to be an accountant or to be a baker.  I got to do both.  In the army, I was an accountant and now I’ve been all over the world doing what I do best – creating  my signature pastries.

Manila hotel Chef Jerome BAnda

“I want my joy in baking to result in the pleasure of eating.” Chef Jerome earned his certificate in Professional Qualification in Pastry, Chocolate and Ice Cream Making in Vincenne, Paris. Prior to his stint in Manila Hotel, he was the head pastry cook of the King of Morocco.

They say baking is a science as well as an art.  Is that true for you?

C’est vrai!  In creating my macarons, for example,  exact measurements must be followed.  After that, the mixture has to stay inside the refrigerator for a number of hours to get the right bite and flavor.  Keeping it in the cold for too long or too short a time will result in disaster!

So it seems that the French Macaron is not only everyone’s favorite dessert but yours as well.

Yes, the macarons and the cheesecakes.  I try to infuse local flavors in whatever country I work in.  When I arrived in Manila, I immediately asked what  the Filipinos love to eat and they said “ube!”  We tried it in the kitchen and voila!  The ube macaron is the most popular out of the eight flavors that we serve now at Café Ilang –Ilang.

How many macarons do you bake in a day?

Easily 600 during the weekdays.  On weekends, when we have over 200 guests, my  chefs make over a thousand!  People line up and I see them putting five or six macarons on their plate.  That puts a smile on my face. Truly, Manila Hotel is the house of  french macarons!

What can the dessert lovers expect next?

Well, I’m adding three or more flavors to the french macarons line as well as the mille-feuille (custard cream slices).  I like to surprise the guests with my creations.  So just come on over and enjoy the treats!

Manila Hotel - Kids with Chef Jerome

Chef Jerome with M and R. My kids love the chocolate fountain and the macarons!

With that, I decided to try the blueberry cheesecake that Chef Jerome recommended.  DELICIOUS! I had already consumed all the flavors of the multi-colored macarons and decided that mango was my favorite.  So many desserts, so little time!  I’m already planning my next visit !

Last Thursday at Cowrie Grill Promenade

What would you consider a perfect meal?  For starters how about a serving of warm bread with different flavors of butter?   A hearty soup and fresh greens before the main course sounds good.  Now, follow that with a hefty portion of  juicy, melt-in-your-mouth steak. Imagine the meat to be so flavorful that there is really no need to pour on any kind of sauce (but there are three condiments, just in case).  And for the consummate finale –a torched meringue dessert!  I’m writing this from memory, by the way.  I had a most enjoyable and delectable lunch last Thursday at the Cowrie Grill by The Manila Hotel.

Loyal patrons of the famed Cowrie Grill are now frequenting its new location at the back of the Promenade Mall along Missouri St., Greenhills.  The place exudes a quiet, rich elegance much like it did when it was still inside The Grande Dame.  As expected, cowrie shells adorn the well-appointed interiors.  On one side, a curtain of these stringed sea shells are hung on the ceiling.  Stylish booths that can seat up to 4 people offer privacy for diners making it the perfect venue for intimate occasions.

The perfect place to wine and dine.

What sets Cowrie Grill apart from other fine dining places?

“We offer a first-rate selection of premium branded steaks and fresh seafoods, fine wines and signature cocktails. People have also come to expect our exceptional service highlighted by visual drama in every table side preparation,” says Executive Chef Michael So Chan.

What can loyal Cowrie Grill  habitués and first-time guests expect from the four decade old establishment?

“We want to introduce the menu to the new generation of  diners. While we have retained the dishes that the regulars have come to love like the Ceasar salad, Lobster Bisque,  and Beef Rib to name a few, we have also added some new flavors to the menu – like the Italian dishes and other meat items.  We also now feature a Cognac bar that lists the most exquisite cognacs and brandies of the world.”

Signature Dishes

I brought my son M to lunch that day and I must say that my normally picky eater of a boy totally enjoyed all of the Chef’s recommendations. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration when I say he ate everything! He even consumed half of my steak!

Food Review: Wildflour’s Winsome Cuisine

It’s 9:30 am and the place is almost full.  It seems that every time I go to Wildflour Café and Bakery, the place gets busier and busier.  I look around and see that early risers are already jumpstarting their day  in both the main dining hall and in the alfresco (read:sidewalk) section.   Pretty good Tuesday morning turnout at the Net Lima BLdg., Bonifacio Global City branch .

The brainchild of sisters and pastry chefs  Ana Ocampo ancd Marge Manzke,  WF started in 2012  as a rustic french bistro which specialized in making its own pasta and breads.  Soon after,  its  cronuts  (that delicious hybrid of a croissant and a donut) sent the whole of Manila into a sweet-craving frenzy.   Lines formed outside the stores at particular hours of the day just to purchase a limited quantity of the  mouthwatering pastries.

Wildflour Breads and Pastries What’s next after cronuts?  “We are always trying to innovate.   Our loyal clientele have their particular favorites and we’re constantly creating new flavors to add to the menu, “ says Chef Allen  Buhay.

Take a Stroll at Century City Mall

I’m so used to going to crowded malls where you have to pray for a parking space, wait to be seated in restaurants ,  and worse you can’t  “overtake” the slow moving person ahead of you.  So I was really quite surprised that I didn’t have any of these woes when I visited (and several times thereafter) CENTURY CITY MALL.   Located  along Kalayaan Ave. corner Salamanca St,  , this boutique mall houses 100 shops and  is the perfect place for leisure and relaxation.

Just leave your answers on the blog.

Aside from its many atractions, another thing I like about Century City Mall is its CONCIERGE SERVICE.  They can handle anyrhing and everything .  From personal shopping, to fetching you and your friends (group of 5) from designated areas in their free shuttle service, to keeping your grocery while you watch a movie and  even arranging a wedding proposal to your unsuspecting girlfriend! They will help plan, reserve and deliver all that you need!  Just call 705-6200.

Plan a party, reserve seats at the cinema or get a special gift delivered to a loved one — these are just some of the services offered by the CCM Concierge.

It’s a new year and it’s definitely time to discover new places to go, dine and shop. So this weekend , come and take a stroll at CENTURY CITY MALL!

In Mint Condition

I’m always on the lookout for something new to serve my children.  This is why I’m in the grocery two to three times a week.  I like to scour the aisles , look at different brands and  read labels.  When I’m  at S&R (which is where I spend  time while waiting for my daughter to come out  from pre-school), I lose track of time because there’s always something new to see.   And for some reason, lately I’ve been drawn to all things “minty”.

Here are some of the products that  I’m currently enjoying.

SWISS MISS Limited Edition Candy Cane with Peppermint Marshamallows

Swiss Miss Candy Cane

Use warm water so the marshmallows will melt slowly.

Somehow , drinking a hot cup of cocoa with  notes of candy canes makes the feeling of Christmas last a little bit longer.  Just had my cup this morning and I felt instantly “cheered-up!”  Great to enjoy with the whole family  during breakfast or in a cold night.

M&M’s Holiday Mint

Warning!  You may find yourself  popping one hard shelled candy  one after another! The limited edition mint flavor M&M’s will definitely melt in your mouth , not in your  hand!

Mint - M&M's

I bought this for about P200 at S&R. Great for brownies as well!

OREO Mint Crème

I wish this could be available all year round!  I bought this delicious pack from THE FOOD BIN and I  really have to control myself from gobbling everything up.  The kids like it too!  Although, I must admit, nothing beats OREO Lemon!  Just make sure you exercise after having your OREO fix!

Chips Ahoy Mint Chocolate Chip

Indulge and have a mint chocolate chip cookie!

It’s chewy,  It’s oh-so-chocolatey and it’s minty! Need I say more?

Bath & Body Candy Cane Bliss

Scents really do affect our moods.

Last but not least , Candy Cane  Bliss frothing handwash from Bath and Body.  I love , love this product!  I bought three  bottles from a trip to LA and I use it all year round.   It makes my hands feel squeaky clean and releases my happy hormones!   Must look for this in the newly opened Bath and BodyWorks’ shops in Manila.

I hope you liked my post for today.  I’ll be sharing more products that I think you’ll enjoy.  Remember ,  we create our own happiness.  I try to find mine in the small and simple things.

Til my next post!
